Salesforce Einstein promises AI inside your CRM — but for many teams the path there is longer and more expensive than expected. Einstein generative features are tied to specific editions and add-ons, priced per user, and configured on Salesforce's terms. If you've looked at the quote and hesitated, you're not alone. Here's what an alternative looks like.
Where Einstein gets expensive
Einstein's AI capabilities are typically packaged as paid add-ons or bundled into the highest-tier editions. Costs scale per user per month, on top of your existing licenses — for a 20-person sales team, that adds up fast. There's also less control over the underlying model: you use what Salesforce provides, billed how Salesforce decides.
What an alternative needs to deliver
A genuine Einstein alternative has to do the everyday AI work — record summaries, email drafting, lead and opportunity scoring, meeting preparation, answering questions about your data — natively inside Salesforce, while respecting your security model. Pulling data out to an external tool isn't an alternative; it's a workaround with audit-trail problems.
AI Engine: flat price, your own AI provider
AI Engine takes a different approach on three fronts:
- Pricing per organization, not per user. One flat monthly fee covers the team. AI usage is billed at cost by your own provider — typically $2–3 per user per month.
- Your choice of model. OpenAI, Anthropic Claude or Azure OpenAI through your own API key. When better models ship, you switch a dropdown — no waiting for a roadmap.
- Standard editions welcome. AI Engine runs on Professional, Enterprise, Unlimited and Developer editions. No forced upgrade to unlock AI.
Feature-by-feature: the daily work
Reps get an assistant on every record page: one-click summaries of any Account, Lead or Opportunity; email drafts written from full record context and sent without leaving the page; 0–100 scoring with written reasoning on every lead and opportunity; meeting-prep briefs; and plain-language questions like "which of my opportunities are stuck?" answered from live CRM data. Admins control exactly which objects and fields the AI can see, and activity is logged without storing prompt contents.
When Einstein is still the right call
Fairness matters: if you're deep in the Salesforce ecosystem with Data Cloud, need Agentforce-style autonomous agents, or your procurement strongly prefers a single vendor, native Einstein may fit. If what you need is practical AI for the daily work of a sales team — at a price that doesn't require a budget meeting — that's the gap AI Engine fills. We've written a similar comparison for Agentforce.
